The Medici Chapels, a treasure a few steps away from Residenza Castiglioni
Take advantage of your stay at the luxury B&B Residenza Castiglioni to visit a hidden pearl right in the centre of Florence: the Medici Chapels Museum.
The complex was obtained from an area of the Church of San Lorenzo to become the majestic burial place of the Medici family, the most powerful family that ever ruled the city of Florence. Seemingly modest, just enter the Medici Chapels to be enchanted by the sumptuous materials and the preciousness of sculptures and inlay. A perfect representation of wealth and greatness of the Tuscan dynasty.
From our luxury B&B in the centre of Florence, just take less than one-minute walk and you are in front of the museum’s entrance, in Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini. After the ticket, you will be in the crypt realized by Buontalenti, where there are some ancient reliquaries, treasures of the Grand Dukes. From the crypt, the itinerary museum develops following two extensions of the Church of San Lorenzo: the New Sacristy and the Chapel of the Princes.
The Chapel of the Princes, completely covered with hard stones, precious marble and Baroque style inlay, hosts the coats of arms of the sixteen Tuscan cities supporting the Medici family. On the sides of the chapel, built in 1604, you can admire the niches planned originally to host the statues of the Grand Dukes, but only those of Ferdinando I and Cosimo II were realized.
From a corridor of the Chapel of the Princes, you reach the New Sacristy, built by Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1521 and 1524 to the will of Pope Leone X. It represents the real attraction of the Medici Chapels, especially because of its sculptures. On the sides, you find the burial monuments of Giuliano Duke of Nemours and Lorenzo Duke of Urbino. Above them, two beautiful groups of bronze statues, created by the professional touch of Michelangelo. Take your time to fully appreciate the “Allegories of Time”– “Night and Day” and “Dawn and Dusk” – on the Medici sarcophagi: you will be delighted.
Stay at the charming B&B Residenza Castiglioni to visit the Medici Chapels and the most important monuments in the centre of Florence, all a walk distance to you.
